New Delhi: In a unique event on the occasion of Guru Purnima Divas here on Tuesday, the Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar honoured TRS MP Prof A S R Nayak along with nine other Parliamentarians hailing from academic background. The function was organised in the Parliament house on Tuesday. 

As a mark of respect, the Minister presented a “Tulsi” sapling and a CD containing Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi to everyone. Presenting the gift first to Dr Karan Singh, the senior most among the  MPs present, the Minister saluted the teachers who worked for the transformation of the nation.  “Education prospers only in those places where teachers are respected,” he said.

He said, with the Parliament having about 50 members from the academic background, it was indeed an institution of immense quality, contrary to the general perception. He focused on the necessity of affordable quality education for all and expressed his faith that accountability of teachers could do real miracles in education. 

In this regard, he recounted the success he had in the school in his adopted village in Bundelkhand which could record a pass percentage of 82 per cent from 28 per cent in seven months. Prof Nayak said he was touched by the gesture. “Rarely does one recognise the contribution of teachers. I am really happy that the Union Minister has made it a point to honour us.”

While among those honoured was Dr Karan Singh, senior most MP, Prof P J Kurien, Dr Upendra Kushwaha, Dr M N Pandey, Dr Jitendra Singh, Prof Saugat Roy and Prof K V Thomas were among the others.
