Kumbh Mela 2025: Akhara Parishad Seeks to Ban ‘Non-Sanatani’ Food Stalls for Religious Purity
The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), representing 13 Hindu monastic orders, has proposed a ban on ‘non-Sanatani’ vendors setting up food stalls at Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj. This recommendation aims to preserve the event’s traditional values and religious sanctity. Recent issues of food safety and purity, such as unhygienic practices, have raised concerns among organizers.
ABAP President Mahant Ravindra Puri explained that only vendors who align with Sanatani (Hindu) traditions should be allowed to participate. He believes this will maintain the spiritual atmosphere expected at Kumbh Mela, one of Hinduism’s largest gatherings.
The Akhara Parishad has also suggested replacing some Urdu terms associated with the festival with Hindi equivalents to reflect traditional culture. Proposed changes include renaming ‘Shahi Snan’ to ‘Rajsi Snan’ and ‘Peshwai’ to ‘Chhavni Pravesh.’
ABAP plans to present these proposals to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after Diwali, requesting formal approval. They have also suggested assigning officials and police personnel who follow vegetarian diets and abstain from alcohol, further supporting the event’s spiritual values.
The proposal has already sparked mixed reactions, as preparations continue for Kumbh Mela 2025.
