ISKCON set to flag off the annual Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra – The Hindu

The event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the international society

International Society for Krishna Consciousness is all set to flag off the annual Sri Jagannath Rath Yatra on July 6 at Gandhi statue, opposite GVMC, at 4 p.m.

The flower-decked chariot will pass through Dabagardens, Jagadamba junction, Waltair main road, and Siripuram before concluding at Andhra University convocation hall.

Giving details of the yatra at a press conference here on Friday, ISKCON president H.G. Samba Das Prabhu said that bhajans, kirtans and kolatam dance would be performed all along the procession.

“As many as 108 varieties of special dishes will be offered to Lord Jagannath on the occasion. Cultural programmes and distribution of prasadam will be organised post the yatra,” he said.

With a 35-ft collapsible canopy, the chariot would be decked up with a variety of flowers sourced from various markets. Similar events would be held at various ISKCON centres on different dates.

As part of the annual ritual, flowers and clothes were sourced from different places.

“Since the celebration of the rath yatra coincides with the 50th anniversary of ISKCON, we are taking special care to organise the event in a grand manner. While fresh flowers will be sourced from Bengaluru for the purpose, exclusive collection of designer clothing is ordered from Mathura for the deities,” said H.G. Nitai Sevini Mataji, festival coordinator. On the upcoming project of 2,900 sq yards of Radha-Krishna temple being constructed at Sagar Nagar premises, she said that the temple structure was nearing completion and the first phase of the venture would be readied by February, 2018.
