Students on the main campus of the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit at Kalady would soon be able to surf the Internet from anywhere on the campus.
The campus is all set to become fully Wi-Fi-enabled. It will be officially launched by next week. Vice Chancellor M.C. Dileepkumar said a data centre would also be opened as part of the project.
The roll-out of the Wi-Fi facility under a local area network was part of the infrastructure projects being initiated on the main campus utilising the funds under the Centre’s Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan, he said (RUSA).
No limit on data usage
Mr. Dileepkumar said that there would be no limit in data usage by the students using the Wi-Fi facility. The aim is to provide them an opportunity to enhance their learning process using the advantages of technology.
The data centre would help in connecting the regional centres of the varsity with the main campus at Kalady. Mr. Dileepkumar said that the facility would help the varsity to telecast expert lectures and academic sessions to students at its regional centres on a real-time basis.
The university had received a boost after the Project Approval Board (PAB) under the RUSA sanctioned Rs. 20 crore. It had initiated projects under the information, communication and technology component as part of the e-campus initiative. About 35% of the funds earmarked under RUSA would be used for infrastructure development.
The Vice Chancellor said a high-level team representing RUSA, which had visited the varsity last week to assess the development work being initiated on the campus, had given a positive appraisal on the progress of the various projects. He said the varsity had plans to draw up new projects for getting the next phase of assistance from the Centre.
