The VHP-backed Ram Rajya Rath Yatra, seeking to mobilise support for a Ram temple in Ayodhya, today drew crowds in large numbers in this town.
The yatra, which was coming from Rameswaram en route to Kanyakumari, passed through the city outskirts, police said.
It was accorded a special reception at the Sarada Women’s College on the outskirts of the city.
Police personnel maintained tight vigil in view of protests from some outfits on Tuesday when the yatra had entered Tamil Nadu at Shencottah.
After crossing the city, the yatra will proceed to Kanyakumari district.
The yatra, which entered Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, reached Rameswaram yesterday after traversing through Tuticorin and Madurai districts. It will reach Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow.
Activists of VHP and some other Hindu outfits, including Hindu Makkal Katchi, accompanied the rath yatra being organised by Sri Ramadasa Mission Universal Society.
