Bijnor continues to flush its waste into Ganga as construction of treatment plant delayed – Times of India

As part of the project, sewage pipes were to be laid in the entire city to carry the effluent to a sewer plant. After the treatment at the plant, the water was to be released into the river or in the fields for irrigation purpose.

According to the project director, PK Agarwal, the work to lay the pipelines has been completed and the treatment plant will be built within a year. “We laid the sewer lines by March 31, this year. But the sewer treatment plant (STP) is not completed yet. The project will start once the plant is ready,” he said.
Executive engineer of Jal Nigam Arun Kumar Tyagi claimed that acquisition of land delayed the project. “Earlier, there was no land for construction of STP. But, after several efforts, we managed to get the land two years ago. Since then, the STP is being built. Due to the delay in the land acquisition, the construction of the sewer lines was affected as the slope of the lines was to be as per the direction of STP,” Tyagi said.
Nrapendra Deswal, a resident of Geeta Nagri, said, “The work is going on a slow pace. The sewer lines are being laid for the past five years. It was to be completed within three years. ”
Recently, people of about a dozen villages along Ravli Road were agitated due to release of the effluent in their fields by the Bijnor Nagar Palika.
The RO of pollution control board, AK Tiwari, said, “We have served notice on Bijnor Nagar Palika authorities over release of effluent in Ganga. Besides, we have also asked the civic body to ensure the completion of STP.”
