Tension in Deoband After Temple Vandalised and Mosque Attacked – The Quint
Meerut: Heavy police presence continued in tense Deoband after a youth allegedly damaged some idols at the Dundia temple in Shastri Crossing late on Wednesdayevening.
After the incident, the alleged perpetrator, Mohd Sadiq, 22, was immediately nabbed by locals and handed over to the police, who filed an FIR against him and two others. However, the news soon spread and members of Hindu organisations arrived at the spot, jamming the road and demanding invocation of NSA against the accused.
Later, a shed of a shop belonging to a local from the minority community was allegedly set on fire. At about 2 am, a mosque at a short distance from the temple was targeted by miscreants. Huge police force has been fdeployed in the area since the incidents.
After the miscreants damaged the mosque gate and walls and carted off some holy books, police got the building repaired overnight, sources said. However, SSP Pradeep Kumar denied that any such attack on the mosque happened.
Local BJP MP Raghav Lakhanpal alleged a larger conspiracy behind the temple desecration and announced that a mahapanchayat would be held at the site shortly.
