Since the day holds an important place in the Tamil calendar and panchangam, kumbabhishekam of 69 temples, including the Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram, Srivilliputhur Andal temple and Bannariamman temple in Coimbatore district, have been organised by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE).

Poojas for the movie starring actor Vikram Prabhu, produced by Sathya Jothi Films, and another starring Bharath-Namitha were performed.

Politically, the Tamilnadu government began its first Assembly session of the year today. The AIADMK has started accepting applications for nominations for the upcoming Assembly election.

Noted astrologer Sivalpuri Singaram says, “January 20 is important because Chithirai yogam will stay the full day which makes the day best suited for the official launch of anything. Moreover, it is not only auspicious but also in valarpirai, the day that marks the period of transition from Amavasya to Pournami. ‘Valar’ translates ‘to grow’, that indicates the period the moon ‘grows’ in size. Thereby, anything which needs growth and prosperity can be started on this day.”

Elaborating, he notes, “Though there are other auspicious days in January, like 21, 25, 28, 29, since this is the first auspicious day of the calendar year, it has grabbed the attention of the people. Moreover, people wish to begin important events at the right time, since they want all celestial forces to work in their favour.”
