Movement calls for retrieval of land near temple | The Hindu

Demanding retrieval of 12.66 acre land near the Mariamman temple, members of Periya Mariamman Temple Land Retrieval Movement took out a procession here recently.

They said that special tahsildar had on July 10, 2012 issued orders that the land that is encroached by the CSI administration belongs to the temple.

The CSI administration had appealed with the Land Commissioner in Chennai, who also issued orders on May 10, 2017 that the land is government poramboke.

Case pending

Again, the CSI administration approached the Madras High Court and the case is pending.

Members said that the district administration failed to take steps in the case and hence, there is a delay.

They said that the proposed 80-feet road project will solve the traffic congestion in the city and urged the administration to actively pursue the case in the court.

They took out a procession from Kottai Eswaran Kovil thatculminated near the temple where the members prepared pongal.

Over 250 men and women were removed by the police for taking out procession without permission and released later.
