The maha kumbabhishekam of Sri Kailasanathaswamy — Sri Kamakshi temple in Kanniyanatham village near here will be performed on September 4 between 6.30 a.m. and 7.30 a.m.

The temple, which remained in a neglected condition, has been renovated at an expenditure of Rs. 23 lakh. “Though it is a small temple, it has special significance and a large number of devotees have started visiting this temple to get their vows fulfilled,” an official of the Hindu Religious Charitable Endowments Department, said.

Though the temple has not been sung by any saint or Nayanmar, legend has it that the presiding deity Sri Kailasanathaswamy had been worshipped by Saptha Kannigal. The village has been named after these seven Kannigai indicating their significance and worship.

The temple has also been given a facelift as part of the renovation. According to the temple priest,V. Balasubramanian, the addition of a shrine dedicated to Sri Anjaneya was another special feature of this temple. The idol, called Sri Bala Guha Anjaneya, is believed to bless the devotees. “There has been an unprecedented congregation of devotees at this temple,” the priest said.
