‘Being Hindu, A Crime In Bengal’ Says Union Minister Babul Supriyo | Republic World
All is not be well in West Bengal. On Sunday, violence erupted in Basirhat in North 24 Paragnas district as a result of a Facebook post by a Class XII student. Republic TV’s crew and OB van were attacked on Tuesday by a mob in the area. The Home Ministry has dispatched 300-400 CRPF personnel to defuse the situation.
The unrest gave way to a political slugfest between the BJP and the TMC.
‘Being Hindu, a crime’
Amidst the tension, BJP MP Babul Supriyo, reacting to the situation, on The Debate said that “being a Hindu in West Bengal is a crime.” He added, “you cannot be a part of a majority, as the minority are the people who keep Mamata Banerjee in power. She has been playing with fire for a very long time.”
Earlier, West Bengal Governor Tripathi had summoned Ms. Banerjee to Raj Bhawan — which she took major exception to. The irate CM then addressed a news conference, where she accused the Governor of threatening her.
Slamming the Governor for speaking “like a block president of the BJP”, Ms. Banerjee reminded him that while he had been nominated to his office, she had been elected directly by the people. She also had stern words for those involved in the communal clashes, warning them to ‘not test her patience.’
Has there been an undeniable escalation of polarisation in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee?
