The Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) Tuesday approved a new fellowship aimed at “Reviving the gurukul tradition”.
As reported by The Indian Express, the council held its meeting on Tuesday in which all members decided to start a new scheme under which ICHR will provide research assistants to historians working on ancient Indian history.
Like the gurukul tradition in which the guru and shishya (student) live together as equals and the latter gains knowledge from this experience, under the new scheme, the historian, in exchange of the research assistant’s help, will train the understudy in his area of expertise. The ICHR will pay a monthly renumeration to the assistant and an annual contingency grant for two years to the historian. Sources said the council will have to amend its funding rules to accommodate the new ‘gurukul’ fellowship.ICHR chairman Y S Rao did not wish to comment on the matter.
The ICHR on Tuesday also organised its annual lecture, which was delivered by historian S C Mittal, who is also the president of RSS’s history wing Akhil Bhartiya Itihaas Sankalan.
