Bhagavad Gita and other religious books will soon become a part of curriculum in Haryana. Here is why the holy book is important for students.
Days after the prominence of Bhagavad Gita — a 700-verse Hindu scripture – was brought to attention in schools and parliament by Ram Bilas Sharma, Education Minister of Haryana; it is now decided that the holy book will become a part of the curriculum along with other religious books. The book will be introduced to kids studying in class 6 and above.
Process of launching the ancient scripture:
- After opposition parties imposed pressure and criticised the Haryana government’s move to introduce the holy book, it was finally got into existence on Tuesday, 29th June, 2016
- “A book, which will include a chapter on ‘Gita’, will be rolled out on July 5 in Kurukshetra,” Gurgaon-based State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Director Sneh Lata said
- The book will have a limited teachings of Bhagavad Gita, as there would be other religious chapters of Islam and Christianity
- Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma will grace the occasion on July 5. “The book is ready and it will be launched on July 5,” she said
- Spilling the beans, she further informed, “The book in Hindi will have one chapter on Gita.”
BJP had earlier presented the idea of introducing Gita so as to impart moral education among kids, unfortunately, the plan was not supported by the opposition party and was called “saffronising” the education system.
Why should Bhagavat Gita be taught in schools?
- Explaining the importance of Gita, Sharma said: “Gita is not a religious book. It is knowledge, science; it is curiosity, it is solution, Gita is life”
- It was taught at great education centres in India like Nalanda and Takshila
- “Now, whether we are saffronising or not, I want to state that Nalanda and Takshila were great centres of learning in ancient times in our country and students from around the world used to come to study in these centres
The Indian holy scripture has been appreciated across the globe:
- “German Orientalist Max Mueller had once got copies of the Vedas into Germany and placing all the four Vedas on his head, he had danced for 30 minutes. “He was overjoyed to have got such wealth of knowledge from the Vedas,” he said
- The ancient book was appreciated at Seton Hall University (SHU) in New Jersey. All business managemen students read the book, which is compulsory in their university.
