Eight temples burgled in one night in Mandya district – The Hindu

Eight temples were burgled between Monday night and Tuesday morning in Mandya district.

Burglars had targeted six temples in different parts of the district and had decamped with cash, silverware and other materials on July 19.

Even before this could fade from public memory, the burglars struck again, looting valuables from Basaveshwara temple in Hale Elekere; Sri Hombalamma and Pattaladamma temples in Yethagadahalli; Bhairaveshwara temple in Aghalaya; Anjaneya Swamy temple in Maduvinakodi, and the village temple at Ranganathapura in K.R. Pet taluk; Anjaneyaswamy temple, near Naguvanahalli Gate, and Maralingeshwara temple, near Maralagala in Srirangapatna taluk, the police said.

Cash stolen

Unidentified persons broke open the doors of eight temples, between Monday night and Tuesday morning, and decamped with cash from collection boxes (hundis), ‘thali’, silverware and others valuables, officials at the police stations concerned said. The incidents came to light on Tuesday morning when the priests noticed the temple doors damaged, a senior police officer told
The Hindu.

“We will intensify night patrolling,” the officer said.

Handiwork of one gang?

The police suspect it to be the handiwork of one gang. Cases have been registered in the jurisdictional police stations.
