Temple razed by Pune varsity, Constructed by students, opens today | Times of India

Nagpur: Students affiliated to different political organizations would be hosting a feast on Friday to mark the completion of temple construction in Nagpur University campus on Amravati Road.

The structure was razed by Nagpur University administration last month but rebuilt and now university is reluctant to stop these students from going ahead.

The organizers said they were expecting 300 to 400 people for the ceremony. Around Rs 30,000 have been collected for the feast while another Rs 35,000 have been spent to construct the temple. This time, it occupies more area than before. An illegal dargah also exists nearby and that too has never attracted any action.

Ajith Singh and Shailendra Tiwari, both students of Mass Communication Department, said they had met vice-chancellor SP Kane, proVC Pramod Yeole, registrar Puran Meshram and students’ welfare director Dilip Kawadkar to extend an invitation for the puja and prasad.

Kane said no permission was given for the event but there was not much he could do to stop it. “The police advised us to be cautious as it is a sensitive issue. There is also a government policy for dealing with such cases. The temple will be clubbed with other encroachments on NU properties and placed before the management council to remove them simultaneously. We can’t stop students from doing it,” he said.

On June 20, TOI had reported how some students and members of National Students Union of India, Nationalist Students Council (NSC), Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had restored the temple.
