With the renovation of Yoga Narasimhar temple entering the final stage, devotees of the deity are happy. Temple authorities have proposed to celebrate the samprokshanam of the temple on July 11.
This temple, said to be 1,000 years old, was in a state of neglect. After the height of the Velachery Main Road (where the temple is located) was raised, the temple would be flooded during heavy rains.
So, residents of the locality planned to renovate the temple and they were particular that the restoration work would be carried out with stones, and not concrete.
A senior official of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department said the construction of the temple had reached the final stage.
He said the work had taken eight years as the temple’s old-style architecture, which involved intricate stone work, had to be retained.
The locality, once called Vedasreni after the presiding deity of the temple, came to be known as Velachery.
The other explanation for the locality getting this name is the performance of several Vedic rituals by sages leading to the place being called as Vellvicheri.
Besides the presiding deity, there are other deities: Vedanarayanar, Kothandaramar, Andal, Hanumar, Azhwars, Ramanuja and Manavala Mamunigal.
