An employee of a well-known hotel in south Delhi has been arrested for stealing jewellery from a temple in New Friends Colony.

The theft was caught in a CCTV camera installed at the temple. Police said that David Pradhan was tracked down from the footage. The stolen jewellery has been recovered from him.

One of the devotees of the Sherawali temple had reported on June 23 that a crown and a necklace were missing from an idol, following which a probe was initiated. A team led by SHO, New Friends Colony, Kuldeep Singh was formed to track down the thief.

The CCTV footages of the temple showed a man — wearing a t-shirt with ’52’ and ‘GAINI’ written on it — praying for sometime and then walking up to the idol. He looked around to check whether he was being watched and then removed the jewellery from the idol. He admired the gold jewellery for sometime and then left the temple.

Police teams were deployed to look for the accused when one of them noticed a man wearing a similar t-shirt near a gurdwara a few kilometres away from the temple.

Pradhan was detained and interrogated during which he admitted to have stolen the jewellery. A raid was conducted at his house in Taimur Nagar and the stolen valuables were recovered.

Pradhan said that he belongs to Darjeeling and was working as a waiter at a five-star hotel in Delhi. He had gone to the temple to pray, but was unable to resist the urge to steal the jewellery and earn some quick money. He had planned to dispose off the jewellery at his hometown to avoid suspicion.

A case of theft has been registered against Pradhan and a probe has been initiated to look for his previous involvements.
